Money & growthBy BI Forge · Business guide

Your ads bring orders. Do those orders leave you money?

One campaign looks like the obvious winner. It reports more sales for every dollar of advertising. But if those orders include lower-margin products, more returns or higher delivery costs, the business result can look different.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A channel can generate sales while leaving little contribution after product, advertising and fulfillment costs. Compare the relevant costs and net sales using consistent rules before deciding where to change a budget.

Follow the orders beyond the advertising dashboard

An advertising platform reports according to its own tracking and attribution rules. Your store records orders and refunds. Finance records costs. Before comparing channels, agree which sales belong in the calculation and which expenses should be included.

A smaller sales number can leave more behind

Consider two simplified channel summaries for the same period.

Illustrative comparisonChannel AChannel B
Net sales$60,000$40,000
Product + fulfillment costs−$42,000−$20,000
Advertising−$10,000−$10,000
Left after the listed costs$8,000$10,000

Illustrative scenario. Costs and sales are assigned under an agreed method. Contribution is not net profit, and channel attribution does not prove advertising caused every assigned order.

Channel A shows six sales dollars per advertising dollar. Channel B shows four. Yet B leaves $2,000 more contribution in this example. That is a reason to investigate the economics, not a promise that shifting the budget will reproduce the result.

Check whether the comparison is fair

A channel may attract new customers whose later purchases happen elsewhere. Returns may arrive later, and more than one platform may claim the same order. A comparison needs these limitations to stay visible.

  • Use consistent sales and cost definitions.
  • Check refunds, cancellations and duplicate attribution.
  • Consider repeat purchases and the period being measured.
  • Keep unattributed or uncertain sales visible.

Use the report to choose the next test

Start with a question such as: which product-and-channel combination deserves a closer review? Look at enough comparable orders to understand the pattern, then test a specific change. The report should help you decide what to examine, rather than turn an attribution estimate into certainty.
